Japan · Route order and nights
Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka: which order makes sense?
Most people know they want to see these three cities. The harder question is where to stay and which city can be a day trip.

What we recommend
For most first trips, stay in Tokyo and then choose either Kyoto or Osaka as your second hotel base. Visit the other city for the day. If you fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka, travel in one direction and do not return to Tokyo.
Two hotels are often enough
Kyoto and Osaka feel different, but they are close enough for a day trip. Changing hotels means packing, checking out, carrying bags and checking in again. That can take up a large part of the day.
Stay in Kyoto if temples, old streets and early mornings matter most. Stay in Osaka if you care more about food, nightlife or easier access to your flight.
- Tokyo + Kyoto: better for early starts in Kyoto.
- Tokyo + Osaka: better for nightlife and some flights.
- Use three hotels only when there is a clear reason.
Use your flights to choose the order
Flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka gives you a simple one-way route. If both flights use Tokyo, leave enough time to return before the flight.
Do not compare flight prices alone. Also count the return train, airport transfer and any extra hotel night.
Count the days you can really use
Arrival and departure days are usually not full sightseeing days. Count your full days first, then decide how many nights each city needs.
Add time for things you actually want to do. Do not give every famous city the same number of nights.
