Japan · Choosing a Tokyo base
Where should you stay in Tokyo on your first trip?
There is no single best Tokyo neighborhood. The right base is the one that shortens your most important days and still feels good when you come home at night.

What we recommend
Choose Shinjuku or Shibuya for nightlife and western Tokyo, Ueno or Asakusa for a calmer traditional side and useful airport access, and Tokyo or Shinagawa when rail connections matter most. More important than the neighborhood name: stay close to a useful station and check the exact walk from the platform to the hotel.
Choose from your itinerary, not a best-neighborhood list
Pin the places you care about, then see which side of Tokyo appears most often. If most days are Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku and nearby areas, staying in the west can reduce repeated travel. If your list leans toward Asakusa, Ueno, museums and older neighborhoods, the east may feel easier.
A hotel that is ten minutes from a station can add twenty minutes to every outing. Check the real entrance, platform connections and last part of the walk.
What the main areas are actually good for
Shinjuku gives you late-night energy and many rail connections, but the station can feel overwhelming. Shibuya works for shopping, fashion and nightlife. Ueno is practical for museums, markets and trips using Ueno Station. Asakusa feels more traditional and often calmer at night. Tokyo Station and Shinagawa are useful when the Shinkansen or airport connection matters more than nightlife.
- Shinjuku: busy, connected and lively late.
- Shibuya: shopping, food and western Tokyo.
- Ueno: practical transport, museums and value.
- Asakusa: traditional atmosphere and quieter evenings.
- Tokyo Station or Shinagawa: strong for onward rail travel.
Check these details before booking
Look at the room size, luggage space, laundry options and the last train route back from your evening plans. If you are traveling with children, older relatives or several suitcases, an easy station matters more than a famous postcode.
Compare the total stay, not only the nightly headline price. Taxes, breakfast, room size and cancellation terms can change which hotel is genuinely better value.
