South Korea · How many bases

Should you stay in Seoul or visit more Korean cities?

More cities give you more variety, but they also mean more trains, flights and hotel changes. Here is how to choose.

THE SHORT ANSWER

What we recommend

For a short first trip, staying in Seoul is completely fine. Add Busan if you really want the coast, Gyeongju for history, or Jeju for the island. Jeju takes more time because you need another flight and more local transport.

When Seoul is enough

Seoul has many different areas. Jongno, Seongsu, Hongdae and Gangnam do not feel the same, so you can have very different days without changing hotels.

Stay in Seoul if your main interests are food, shopping, cafés and city neighborhoods. Add another city only if the coast, an island or historic sites are a major reason for the trip.

  • One hotel is easier when the trip is short.
  • Add a city because you truly want it, not because it is famous.
  • Give yourself an easier arrival day.

What each city adds

Busan adds beaches, coastal areas and markets. Gyeongju adds historic sites. Jeju adds island scenery, but the sights are spread out and local transport takes planning.

You do not need to add all three. Pick the one you care about most.

A train ride is not the whole travel day

Also count the ride from your hotel to the station, time to find the platform, the trip to the next hotel and check-in. Check the exact train on the official Korail website.

Do not book an important timed activity right after a long transfer.
