South Korea · Choosing a Seoul base

Where should you stay in Seoul: Myeongdong, Hongdae or Jongno?

These neighborhoods are all convenient in different ways. Choose the one that fits your evenings, airport transfer and the side of Seoul you will visit most.

THE SHORT ANSWER

What we recommend

Choose Myeongdong for a central, easy first base; Hongdae for nightlife, cafés and a younger atmosphere; or Jongno for palaces, older neighborhoods and quieter mornings. Also consider the exact subway line, airport arrival route and uphill walk to the hotel.

Myeongdong: the easy central choice

Myeongdong is useful when you want a straightforward first stay with shopping, food and access to several major areas. It can feel commercial and busy, but it reduces the amount of decision-making for a first visit.

Check whether the hotel is closer to Myeong-dong Station or Euljiro 1-ga. The difference can change which journeys are simplest.

Hongdae: better for late evenings

Hongdae suits travelers who care about cafés, independent shops, nightlife and staying out later. The airport rail connection can also be convenient, depending on the exact hotel.

It is west of many palace and historic-area sights, so you may spend more time crossing the city on sightseeing mornings.

Jongno: better for history and neighborhood walks

Jongno places you near palaces, Insadong, Ikseon-dong and older parts of central Seoul. It works well for travelers who want earlier sightseeing and calmer evenings.

The word Jongno covers a large area. Check the nearest station and the actual walking route instead of relying on the district name alone.

The quickest way to decide

Pick the area that wins two of these three questions: Where will you spend most mornings? Where will you spend most evenings? Which airport or train connection will you use with luggage?

If the answers split evenly, choose the better hotel close to a useful station. Seoul is large, but you do not need the perfect neighborhood to have a good trip.
