Alipay or WeChat Pay for China: what should visitors set up?

Mobile payment makes everyday travel in China much easier, but do not wait until a taxi or ticket machine to set it up for the first time.

THE SHORT ANSWER

What we recommend

Set up at least one major mobile-payment app before departure, link the same international card and passport details you will travel with, and keep another card plus some cash as backup. Test the account and remember that your bank may still block an overseas transaction even when the app is working.

Do the setup before you fly

Download the official app, create the account and link an eligible international bank card while you still have reliable access to your phone number and bank. Use your name and identity information consistently.

Do not assume that downloading the app is the same as being ready to pay. Finish any identity or card checks shown in your account.

  • Use the phone number you can access during the trip.
  • Tell your card issuer about international travel if required.
  • Keep the physical card and a second payment method separate.

Do you need both apps?

One working app can cover many ordinary purchases. Setting up both can give you a backup and may help with different mini-programs, but it also adds another account to manage.

Start with the app you understand best. Add the second only after the first is working. The goal is reliability, not collecting every possible app.

What to do if a payment fails

Try the other linked card or payment app, ask whether a bank card or cash is accepted, and check for a message from your bank. Do not keep repeating a declined payment without reading the error.

Carry a modest cash backup. Foreign visitors have several payment options, but acceptance can still vary by merchant and situation.

Build payment setup into the itinerary

Keep the arrival evening simple and avoid a chain of non-refundable reservations before you know your phone, data and payment setup are working.

Save hotel addresses in Chinese and keep the payment apps accessible offline where possible. A good first-day plan reduces the number of things that must work perfectly at once.
