China train stations: what to check before travel day

The train may be fast, but getting to and from a large station can take time. Check the full trip before you book.

THE SHORT ANSWER

What we recommend

Check the full station name at both ends. Allow time to get there, pass security, find the gate, leave the arrival station and reach your next hotel. The train time is only one part of the journey.

Check the full station name

Large cities can have several train stations, and they may be far apart. Save the full name, such as Shanghai Hongqiao, instead of only writing Shanghai.

A faster train is not always the best choice if the station is far from your hotel. Compare the whole trip from one hotel to the next.

  • Save the full station name at both ends.
  • Check the route from your actual hotel.
  • Leave extra time on holidays and your first train day.

Use the correct passenger details

The passenger name and ID document used to buy the ticket must match the traveler. Check the latest rules on the official China Railway 12306 website.

Keep the document with you at the station. Do not pack it in your suitcase.

Keep the first plan after arrival simple

After the train, you still need to leave the station and reach the hotel. If the room is not ready, ask the hotel about luggage storage.

Choose something close to the hotel for the first activity. Do not book a timed museum or a far-away dinner right after a long train trip.
